Summary
GibbsCAM 2026 replaces the Advanced 3D core with the ModuleWorks 3-axis engine. The interface remains familiar, but converted settings and regenerated toolpaths may differ from earlier releases. Validate every Advanced 3D operation before releasing new NC code.

What Changed in GibbsCAM 2026
Remove Spikes and Optimize Z Level are no longer needed, and Hit Flats behavior is more consistent.
Before You Begin
• Use GibbsCAM 2026 with the required SolidSurfacer or Advanced 3D license, approved MDD, tools, stock, fixtures, and post processor.
• Preserve the approved legacy part and NC output. Perform migration work only in a clearly named copy.
• Define the acceptance checks for machining region, remaining material, surface finish, runtime, clearance, and posted output.
• Review the GibbsCAM 2026 Readme and the SolidSurfacer guide chapter Advanced 3D before regenerating production work.

Procedure
Step 1 - Create a Controlled Upgrade Copy
1. In the original GibbsCAM release, save and retain the approved part file and NC output.
2. Create a separate copy for GibbsCAM 2026 testing.
3. Record the tools, process settings, boundaries, stock, fixtures, MDD, and post used by each Advanced 3D operation.
4. Capture the legacy toolpath and Simulation result for comparison.
Step 2 - Review Converted Settings
1. Open the test copy in GibbsCAM 2026 and read each conversion message before continuing.
2. Review any operation that used Shallow Areas or Cutter Contact Areas. These boundary styles convert to Part Bounding Box.
3. Confirm the intended replacement for Rest Material, Pocketing With Core Detection, Adaptive Stepdown, and Min/Max Stepover.
4. Review linking because the new engine provides fewer options and may produce different motion.
Step 3 - Regenerate and Compare
1. Regenerate one Advanced 3D operation at a time.
2. Compare the new and legacy paths for machining region, stepovers, stepdowns, wall cleanup, corner cleanup, entry, exit, and linking motion.
3. Run Simulation and inspect remaining material, gouges, tool and holder clearance, and the expected surface result.
4. Record each material difference and adjust only the settings needed to restore the approved machining intent.
Step 4 - Complete Production Validation
1. Regenerate and simulate the complete operation sequence after individual operations pass review.
2. Post with the approved GibbsCAM 2026 post processor and compare the output using the shop's release process.
3. Complete any required prove-out or first-article checks.
4. Release the updated program only after the documented acceptance criteria are met.
Expected Result
• Every legacy Advanced 3D operation has been reviewed, regenerated, and simulated in GibbsCAM 2026.
• Converted boundaries and replacement controls preserve the intended machining region and finish.
• The posted program passes the approved production-validation process before release.
Best Practices
• Treat regenerated Advanced 3D operations as new toolpaths, even when parameters appear unchanged.
• Regenerate and compare one operation at a time so the source of a change remains clear.
• Keep the original part, toolpath evidence, and NC output until the GibbsCAM 2026 program is approved.
• Use the current Readme and SolidSurfacer Advanced 3D documentation when a control has moved, disappeared, or changed behavior.
• Document CAMCO-approved acceptance criteria before re-releasing recurring production work.
Troubleshooting
• Problem: An older GibbsCAM version opens the part but cannot edit or regenerate Advanced 3D toolpath.
Cause
• Saving Advanced 3D or 5-Axis toolpath back to older GibbsCAM versions is not supported.
• Older releases can only view, simulate, and post the saved toolpath.
Resolution
Open the part in GibbsCAM 2026 whenever the Advanced 3D operation must be edited or regenerated. Keep the required GibbsCAM 2026 environment available with the production files.
• Problem: A legacy boundary changes to Part Bounding Box.
Cause
• The operation used Shallow Areas or Cutter Contact Areas.
• Those boundary types are removed from the GibbsCAM 2026 Advanced 3D engine.
Resolution
Review the converted machining region, select an appropriate supported boundary approach if needed, regenerate the operation, and validate the complete path before release.
• Problem: A familiar Advanced 3D control is missing.
Cause
• Remove Spikes and Optimize Z Level are no longer required.
• Other functions were combined or replaced by Material Only, Wall Cleanup, constant stepover with corner cleanup, or simplified linking.
Resolution
Identify the machining intent of the former control, use the GibbsCAM 2026 replacement described in the SolidSurfacer guide, and validate the resulting toolpath.
• Problem: The regenerated toolpath differs from the legacy result.
Cause
• GibbsCAM 2026 uses a completely new Advanced 3D engine.
• Converted strategies, boundaries, stepovers, or linking can change motion even when other parameters match.
Resolution
Compare one operation at a time, inspect the converted settings, simulate the full path, and adjust only what is necessary to meet the approved machining intent.
• Problem: The new result does not meet the expected finish, runtime, or clearance criteria.
Cause
• A converted setting may not match the legacy strategy's effect.
• A part-specific condition may require guidance from the current Readme or SolidSurfacer documentation.
Resolution
Stop production release, preserve the comparison files, review the current documentation, and submit the part and acceptance details to CAMCO Technical Support when the difference cannot be resolved safely.
